Last updated: October 2026 · Glomax8K editorial desk · the honest version, from a provider with 8K in its name
The short answer
Almost nothing on live television is broadcast in 8K anywhere in the world. What an “8K” IPTV service realistically means is: 8K-capable delivery, a small amount of genuine 8K on-demand content, and 4K sources that an 8K TV upscales well. Anyone claiming thousands of 8K live channels is describing something that does not exist.
The numbers, plainly
| Format | Resolution | Pixels | Bandwidth needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | 1280×720 | 0.9 MP | ~10 Mbps |
| Full HD | 1920×1080 | 2.1 MP | ~15 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD | 3840×2160 | 8.3 MP | ~25 Mbps |
| 8K | 7680×4320 | 33.2 MP | ~60–100 Mbps |
8K is four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times Full HD. The bandwidth figure is the part that matters: 8K needs, at minimum, a steady 60 Mbps per screen, and comfortably more. That alone explains why no broadcaster delivers live 8K at scale.
Who actually broadcasts in 8K?
A very short list. Japan’s NHK has run an 8K satellite channel for years. A handful of showcase events — some Olympic coverage, occasional demonstrations — have been produced in 8K. Beyond that, essentially nothing on live television is natively 8K, because the cameras, the production chain, the satellite capacity and the audience hardware are all still catching up.
So when an IPTV provider’s name has 8K in it — ours does — the fair question is what that is actually describing.
What Glomax8K means by it
- 8K-capable delivery. Our streams are not bandwidth-capped at 4K. Where a genuine 8K source exists, we can carry it without re-encoding it down.
- A small genuine 8K VOD section. Some of the 240,000+ on-demand titles are mastered in 8K. It is a small section, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
- A large 4K line-up that an 8K TV upscales well. This is where most of the practical benefit sits. A good 8K panel upscaling a clean 4K source looks excellent; the same panel upscaling a compressed 1080p stream does not.
- Headroom. As 8K sources appear, nothing in the delivery chain has to change.
What it does not mean is 80,000 channels in 8K. Most of our live line-up is Full HD, a growing part is 4K, and that is what the broadcasters produce.
Can your TV even show it?
- The panel must be 8K. 7680×4320. An “8K-ready” or “8K upscaling” label on a 4K panel is marketing.
- The connection must be HDMI 2.1 on a certified cable, and on a port that supports it — often not every port on the TV.
- The source device must decode 8K. Almost no streaming stick does. A Fire TV Stick caps at 4K regardless of the stream; this is a job for the TV’s own app or a high-end media player.
- Screen size and viewing distance matter more than at 4K. Below about 75 inches, at normal living-room distance, the difference between good 4K and 8K is close to invisible to most people. This is physics, not opinion.
Why 4K is the number that should decide your purchase
If you are choosing a provider today, judge them on 4K, not 8K. 4K content genuinely exists in volume, 4K is where sport is heading, and a provider that handles 4K cleanly at peak hour is doing the hard part. Our provider checklist is built around that.
A practical test during a trial: open a channel labelled 4K, check the resolution in your player’s info panel (3840×2160 or it is not 4K), and watch a wide crowd shot in a stadium. Real 4K keeps individual faces; upscaled HD turns them to mush.
If you want to try 8K seriously
| What you need | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Connection | 60 Mbps stable per screen, Ethernet strongly preferred |
| TV | Native 8K panel, 75 inches or larger to see the benefit |
| Cable | Certified HDMI 2.1 on an HDMI 2.1 port |
| Source device | The TV’s own app, or a player with 8K decoding |
| Content | The 8K VOD section — there is no 8K live sport yet |
Providers focused on picture quality
